On Sunday, March 19th the NOVA Women traveled to Annapolis, MD to take on
the Naval Academy women. This was NOVA's first game of the season, and
while that showed at times, over all the women played very well together.
The match was composed of 3 40 minutes halves that allowed all of the
players to get at least 40 minutes of playing time. The NOVA Women easily
won the first two periods, scoring multiple times on third or fourth phase
when the women were able to attack wide. However, the Navy Women, currently
the #2 ranked college side in the Nation, showed why they deserve that
ranking, dominating in rucks and playing very strong first and second phase
defense. The Navy women were also able to pull out a win in the third
period, that featured a few brand new NOVA rookies!
Congratulations to all of the NOVA players, but especially to the rookies
who debuted this past weekend in their first match as NOVA player:
Katie Gavit, Anya Slutskiy, Molly Johnson, Diana Santay, Sarah Chobot, and
Jackie (I forgot your last name!!).
Next Week:
On Tuesday, March 21st the NOVA women hosted a college clinic for two local
college sides (George Washington and Georgetown), as well as a traveling
squad from Wesleyan in Connecticut. After a 2 hour clinic that went over
tackling, rucking, scrumming, decision making, and back line offense, the
NOVA players gave the college girls a flyer about their program and a
t-shirt. This was not only a great recruiting opportunity for the club, but
a means to give back to the rugby community.
This Upcoming Weekend:
The NOVA Women head to Nashville, TN, with two sides
to participate for the 2nd year in a row in Nash Bash. The tournament
features both Club Women and Men's sides as well as College Women and Men's
Sides.
Dana Creager will be playing for the US 7's National Team in Hong Kong.
Stacy Bennett, Liz King, and Sarah Chobot will be participating in the US
Women's 15's camp in Chula Vista, CA.
